Omegas

Do you know the 2 basic types of Omegas? Sure Omega-3 seems to be showing up everywhere but how does it work. Well essential fatty acids are necessary for biological processes in your body. Your body cannot create these acids and therefore they must be consumed in your diet. There are 2 basic fatty acids, Omega-3s and Omega-6s. Omega-6s are in almost everything one eats in a modern diet, therefore there is no need to worry about getting enough Omega-6s. In fact the real problem is getting the right balance of Omega-6s and Omega-3s.

If you eat a lot of wild game and wild fish you do not need to worry about this balance. This wild food supply tends to eat grasses or algae which are good sources of Omega-3s so this diet provides an excellent source of Omega-3s. Unfortunately most modern diets are based on grain fed livestock which creates meat sources that are rich in Omega-6s, this is a radical change from 20-30 years ago.

Good Omegas

So in simple terms, unless you live off the land or have a good source of grass fed livestock you probably need to take a good Omega-3 Supplement. These are extra strength Omega-3s. I like them because they have high levels of EPA and DHA and the serviing size is three capsules per day. This way you can spread your supplements out over the day just like your meals and consume Omega-3s over the day to help maintain good Omega-3s all day long. But it is also important to look for food sources that are not filled with Omega-6 in order to get a good balance of Omegas in you diet. Dr. Oz and Dr. Hyman provide some good information in this Omegas Video
